All you need are some foam sheets that you will pre-cut into shapes. These don't have to be perfect or even actual shapes. Here is an example of my handiwork.
Then just fill a cup with water and supply a paintbrush. You can do this activity outdoors or indoors so it makes for a good rainy day or "too hot out" activity. You will also need a window. If you don't have one at your child's level I imagine this would work just fine on a mirror.
I showed the girls how they could "paint" the back of the shape with water and then "magically" stick the shape to the window. They loved how the pieces stuck up there. I kept this very open ended at first, but was surprised when the girls started combining the shapes to make things. B was the first. She was super excited that she made an ice cream cone using a triangle and a circle. "A" made a house by using a larger square and a triangle. I think next time I may make a few more shapes keeping in mind what they can build with them.
Nothing like sisters working together.
There is so much you can do with this activity depending on the age of your child. You can use it to review colors, shapes, cut the foam into letters and have your older child spell words, etc...I am sure you will come up with your own creative spin on this. The best part? When you are done, the foam pieces can be put away and used again so your $1 investment is going to last you a good, long time. Oh and you might be able to trick your child into cleaning your windows. I was not.

Your blog is so unbelievaly adoreable! Thanks for following. I am following back!
ReplyDeleteLove the fine motor stuff especially the new take on beads and numbers. So many skills covered (patterning, counting, pincer grasp (fine motor), addition, and possibly subtraction if they put on too many, and also color regognition). Hmmm...gives me ideas...using pipe cleaners to pattern and mybe making patterning cards for them to copy (kind of a duh I guess, but sometimes I forget my creativity thinking cap). Hmmm...what else with pipe cleaners and/or beads. Thanks for the ideas.
ReplyDeleteThe fine motor skills involved in this are so important!
ReplyDeleteHow about that! I still think I'll have to try it to really believe it...
ReplyDeleteFollowing back from http://momsbestnest.blogspot.com/. Thanks for following. I look forward to reading more of your nearly unbelievable post ;)
Great idea!
ReplyDeleteI love this! My daughter is just one, but in a few months, this will be exactly right for her:) Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteReally cute! Can't wait to try this with my little ones. I'm a new follower. Stop by and say hi if you get a chance! Lorie http://readingconfetti.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteHi there, I'm following you back. Very lovely site here and pretty.
ReplyDeleteI love this project and my girls love it, too. Check out our experience with wet foam : http://letkidscreate.blogspot.com/2011/07/fun-with-foam.html . I think the possibilities of what kids can create with these are endless.
ReplyDeleteHow awesome! Seeing your little girls reminds me of when my girls were this age. My daughters are 18 months apart, however they are now 23 and 21. Cherish every moment as it goes by so fast. My youngest, my son is now 10 and I can remember how much my kids always loved crafts. Thank you for the visit via the Wednesday Blog Hop. I am now following you back. Feel free to stop over my blog anytime and leave me any questions you may have. I work from home, and have been for the past 2 years, so blogging is part of my full-time job now. I have only really been blogging for a little over a year. I know it's can be hard to tell since my blog is so crowded. But I have learned a lot this past year. Have an great Thursday with your little ones!

Great Blog. Seeing pictures of your girls crafting reminded me of my kids when they were that age, it made me smile. I got them involved with crafting by the age of 2. Now that they are older we don't have as much crafting time as we used to.

That's a great idea. When your kids get older, you could cut the foam into letters (with a cricut or silhouette) and let them learn their alphabet and make words. Kind of like alphabet magnets.
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting! I am now following you back. Have a good weekend!
Hi Vicky, just saying hello from http://createwithyourhands.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteThanks for popping by, glad you liked the cardboard box house. Box was about 45cm square and 35cm deep but any deep squarish box would do.
Love the foam window pictures, I did similar with my eldest last winter, but definitely need to give it a go again soon with both of them now Shoeshine is big enough to join in. Love the picture of your girls working together. Looking forward to reading more of your posts.

ReplyDeleteThis is really a good idea. I wish I had thought of it when I was teaching 3-year-olds. There would be no mess like you would get with a traditional painting activity. Easy cleanup.
Just popped over to check out your site after you posted a comment on mine! What a great cheap and easy way to keep the kids busy - looks like they had a blast! I'll have to try that with mine on our next rainy day.

ReplyDeleteI love this idea! I have been wanting to put up shapes/numbers & other learning materials on the walls or a felt board but this is the perfect solution since I did not want to take up wall space! We can just stick them to the sliding glass door and take them down until next time. Thank you for sharing!
