Berry Egg-citing Easter Eggs

So we seem to be on an Easter egg kick at our house. We haven't actually decorated any real eggs, but have done a lot with paper eggs and cookie eggs. Today we move on to paper towel eggs. I will warn you before we start, this activity can get messy, so bring out the smocks.

Supplies you will need:
  • Paper towels
  • Frozen berries

Okay, you've got to love a two item supply list.  And I bet you already have the paper towels. I have had the frozen berries sitting in the freezer for some time and this seemed like a good use for them.

Place some frozen berries in a glass bowl. I used a white ceramic bowl and was worried about staining but luckily didn't have any. Still, do as I say and not as I do, and use a glass bowl. Microwave the berries until they are thawed. Mine took about one minute.

When they are thawed, mash the berries with a fork to get as much juice as possible from them.

Cut some egg shapes out of paper towels. I have so much trouble with egg shapes, but they ended up looking fairly oval like.

Fold the paper towel egg for your child if they are very young, or if they are able, let your child fold the paper towel themselves. We experimented with lots of different folds to see if we could get different effects on our eggs.

Next, have your child dip their folded paper towel into the bowl of mashed berry juice.

When they take out the paper towel have them carefully turn it so that they can dip another section.

When they are done dipping, open up the paper towel eggs and admire the designs. My kids liked finding ones that looked like faces.

I like how the one on the right looks like a heart.

Place on some wax paper or old newspaper to dry.

  3. Looks like fun when you open up the eggs to see the design. Would food coloring in water work as well or does it bleed too much? Renee
