Learning About Colors: Button Sorting

Colorful buttons are a great thing to have in your crafty mom toolbox. You can use them for all kinds of fun learning activities like counting with muffin cups, stringing on a necklace and even stacking.
I really think you get your money's worth from a set of chunky buttons. I got some buttons that are in fun shapes and sizes and used them along with some trays for learning about colors

You will need:
  • Colorful buttons
  • A tray with compartments for sorting

I got the bead tray on the right at Michael's but you don't need anything fancy. An ice tray works well too. If you don't have an ice tray yet, garage sales are good places to pick some up. We use them for all sorts of sorting and color mixing activities.

I started out by placing a button of each color in a different spot on the tray. This was to help the kids know where they would place buttons of that color. Older children can do the initial sorting themselves.

Each child got a cup of colorful buttons and then placed the buttons in the correct spot.

My littlest one had fun discriminating between the colors.

My only advice wold be to make sure you have enough buttons. Three kids and one bag of buttons did not go very far. The kids were having such a good time that they kept asking for more buttons and I wish I would have had more to give them.
