Surviving the Unexpected on a Road Trip

Whoever said "getting there is half the fun," never took a road trip with my kids. They are not the best car travelers. I would take flying over driving any day, but flying with a family of 5 can get costly. So we packed up the car recently, and headed to Disneyland. The ride there (besides being LONG and traffic filled) was not that bad. The ride back on the other hand was another story. Two kids were complaining of stomach pains, so much so that we had to keep pulling over, and then my youngest vomited all over the car and her clothes. When she was about a year old, we were driving back from Disneyland and she started vomiting as well but wouldn't stop and we ended up in urgent care. Thankfully, this time just appeared to be a bout of car sickness.

So what can you do when the unexpected occurs on a road trip? Here are some tips I've picked up over the years.

1- Remain calm. Whether it's an illness, a diaper blowout (we've had our share of those too), or cranky kids, nothing good will come out of losing your cool. In fact, you will only put everyone else on edge. Kids often look to their parents to determine how they should react. If the parents remain calm, odds are the kids will as well.

2- Pull over in a safe area. We were lucky that when my daughter got ill on this trip, we were very close to an exit and a gas station where we could stop safely. When my daughter got violently ill as a one year old we were on a long stretch of freeway with no civilization in sight. It was also dark and rainy. But we needed to stop, so we pulled over as far as we could onto the should, turned on our emergency lights and took care of business. If you can't make it to an exit, get over as far as you can, use emergency lights and flares and try and take care of things on the passenger side of the car which is further from traffic.

3- Be prepared. If your child gets motion sick during a ride and needs to vomit you can contain the mess by having a bag handy for them or at least near the front seat where you can pass it to them. It's also a good idea to keep a bag of extra clothes in the back seat so if you do need a change of clothes and are are on the side of the freeway, you can avoid searching for clothes in the luggage in the trunk.

Now none of these tips will help you when you get home and have to deal with a mountain of dirty clothes, but scroll down for one that will.

Warning: gross pictures ahead.

When I saw my daughter's stained pants from the car ride, I was worried they were done for. I even told my husband to throw them out at the rest stop since I didn't think the stain would come out. He ignored my advice (I wish I could say that was a rare occurrence) and saved the pants.

Her shirt wasn't in much better shape.

As soon as we got home, I started a load of laundry. I had received some White Cloud Laundry Detergent and decided to put it to the test. After all, if it could get out this tough stain, it must be good! I used Blooming Lavender Scent and it smelled divine when I opened the bottle - like a relaxing field of lavender which is just the opposite of what our car smelled like after our trip. White Cloud also comes in Summer Breeze and Tropical Fiesta.

Much to my surprise, when the clothes came out of the dryer, they were as good as new. They smelled great, and I couldn't even tell where there the stains had been. White Cloud uses 3-in-1 Micro Clean Technology which contains a pre-treater, stain remover, and color booster to get out even the toughest stains. Obviously.

I love how White Cloud saved an an outfit that I thought was ruined and it did so while leaving my clothes soft and clean and smelling fresh.
