My kids are always counting. Games of hide and seek are a frequent occurrence in our house. I noticed that my two year old sometimes got her numbers confused when counting, so I created some fun math games that would help with numerical order, number recognition and even fine motor skills. I will share the first one with you today. Kids will love it because it involves water which just makes everything so much more fun.

- Large bowl
- Ping pong balls
- Permanent marker
- Spoon
- Plastic paint tray or an egg carton

The first thing you need to do is write the numbers 1-12 on some ping pong balls using your permanent marker.
Drop your balls in the bowl and fill it with water.
Ask your child to use a spoon to scoop out the balls in numerical order starting with the number 1.
This is more challenging than you might think as they then have to transfer to ball to a paint tray. An empty egg carton would work for this purpose as well.
The kids had fun placing the balls in the right order on the tray. Since I have three kids, they each took turns scooping a number and placing it on the tray. They have also done this preschool math activity individually where one child got to scoop all the numbers out in order. It's a fun way to practice numbers. This would be a great outdoor activity as well where you could spread out the trays from the bowl so that kids would have to walk and balance the ball on the spoon. Hey, I think I just created a new activity for when the weather warms up!

ReplyDeleteWow, just stumbled across this & all I can say is great minds think alike. I just did a similar activity TODAY (using golf balls) for 2 digit number recognition & some addition fun! Just using the balls made it a giggly activity versus a grumbling math time.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! I love the balance that is worked on during this activity.
