Scented Art

We have been having fun with cereal lately. In addition to eating it (which we do plenty) we have been using it create some fun art. You may recall these cool Crushed Cereal Rainbow Bottles we made earlier this week. We crushed some Fruity Pebbles and layered them in a small bottle to form a rainbow pattern. That worked so well that we decided to crush some Fruit Loops to make Scented Art.

Have your child sort the various colors of fruit loops into different cups. This is a great color sorting activity for little ones. When you are done, place each color into a separate zip top bag and crush them by rolling with a rolling pin. You can refer to the Crushed Cereal Rainbow Bottles post to see how we did this.

Once the cereal has been crushed, place each color in a cup. You will be using this crushed cereal to create your scented art.

You will need:

White glue
Fruit Loops or Fruity Pebbles Cereal
Small zip top bags
Rolling pin
Black and white construction paper
Small cups
Paper plates

Provide your child with a bottle of glue and some construction paper. We started out using black construction paper. You child will be squeezing out a design using the glue. This could be a challenge for little hands. My youngest, who is 3, really had to use her hand muscles to get the glue to pour out.

After they are done gluing their design, they can sprinkle some of the crushed cereal onto the glue.

I recommend sprinkling one color on at a time. Then shaking the excess onto a paper plate which you can then pour back into its original cup.

My kids really loved the yummy smells as they worked on their art.

This is a messy activity so you will have crushed cereal all over your table and floor. Get out the vacuum after this activity!

If you have older kids, they might want to make pictures using the glue and scented crushed cereal. My five year old decided to make a rainbow. She worked super hard to draw her curves with her glue.

When my other daughter saw her twin made a rainbow, she decided she wanted to make one too. She was having trouble making the rainbow with the glue so I helped her with that part, but I was thrilled to see that she added details such as a tree, grass and a flower herself.
