It's been a while since I have posted a fun food idea. With Halloween around the corner, I was inspired for this easy meal by some popcorn we had made earlier in the day. I was thinking of how some pieces resembled ghosts and I decided to build a meal around them. Unfortunately, I decided to do this about 7 minutes before we were supposed to eat, and I needed to make 3 of these plates. I'm sure there was a lot more I could have done, but I was happy with what I did in 7 minutes.
The supplies I used were a pumpkin cookie cutter (you might remember this from an earlier painting project), black Wilton food writer, and a pumpkin cupcake topper. I used the pumpkin shaped cookie cutter on the American cheese and then cut the face out with a knife. I made a gate for the pumpkin to sit on with buttered toast (hubby didn't think it looked much like a gate, but my kids are 3 and 20 months so they are less discriminating). I carved a little jack o'lantern out of cheddar cheese and used my food writer on it before putting a cupcake topper on top. I wanted a scarecrow, but time was running out so hubby made one out of a hot dog. I think it came out pretty cute considering our limited time.
My favorite thing on the plate were the popcorn ghosts. I tried to find pieces of popcorn that looked more "ghostly." Then I made spooky faces on them with my trusty food writers. They were almost too cute to eat. Almost. The girls gobbled up their spooky meal in no time at all.
Don't feel like you need a lot of time to create a fun eating experience for your kids. Even if your food doesn't look exactly like what it's supposed to, kids are excited by the novelty and impressed by the effort. Husbands, on the other hand, are are little more picky.

ReplyDeleteVery creative! The ghost popcorn is adorable! And for vegetarians, you could probably easily substitute a carrot for the hot dog. Deb @ LivingMontessoriNow.com
