I have long been a fan of Max Lucado's books and messages. His books for adults are so inspiring that I was excited to read a children's book that he authored. He created the character of Hermie the caterpillar to teach children about God's love. My children recently had the chance to read Hermie: God Listens When I Pray which was authored by Max Lucado and published by Tommy Nelson.

In the book, Hermie is in a rush to get to his grandmother's house, but when he spots a friend who needs help, he stops to see what he can do. His friend, Antonio has gotten stuck under a rock and Hermie is not strong enough to push the rock away. He tries to find someone who will help but then realized that he should turn to God through prayer. The book really teachers kids about the power of prayer and how God should always be the first one we turn to.

The book is recommend for kids ages 4-7 but my 2 year old found the story very engaging. A day after being introduced to the book she opened it up herself and pointed to a page and said "he stuck under a rock." Though the book is fun for little ones it still teaches about prayer from a biblical perspective.

Because the book is a Level 2 reader, new readers will feel confident tackling the text. There are many sight words and simple sentences here that young readers will be able to enjoy. My twins are early readers and they recognized many words they knew in the book.

Here is one of my twins demonstrating how Hermie tried to move the rock off of his friend's foot.
Check out the colorful illustrations and engaging text on the
flipbook.

ReplyDeleteWe pray at different times through out the day. Usually in the morning and at meal times. I started praying with my 2 year old- a little prayer that he repeats before bed. This looks like a great book. :)
