One of the responsibilities that I have as a mom is to help my kids learn to think about the world outside of themselves. This has become increasingly difficult in today's society. I have noticed at times my kids having an attitude of entitlement and I love to find ways to get them to appreciate what they have by helping others who are less fortunate. I recently had an opportunity to do just that when we took part in a SIMPLE Service Project with Champions for Kids and Colgate.
Champions for Kids is a wonderful organization on a mission to make sure kids have access to all the resources they need to thrive. One of the ways in which they do this is by encouraging people to complete a SIMPLE Service Project. A SIMPLE Service Project is just that - simple. It is an easy way that people can get involved and help children in their community.
This month, Champions for Kids and Colgate are working together in the Bright Smiles, Bright Futures campaign. I am excited to share how easy it was for my kids to participate in providing for the dental hygiene needs of area children.
Before we went shopping, I talked with my children about how there are kids who don't have toothbrushes and toothpaste to take care of their teeth like we do. We discussed how we could help them and then we headed to Walmart to purchase some Colgate toothbrushes and toothpaste. My kids were immediately drawn to the Dora the Explorer and Spongebob Squarepants varieties.
The kids really got in the spirit of giving as they selected Colgate products for us to purchase.
They took the time to think about what girls and boys would like. They started filling our cart with Dora the Explorer and Spongebob Squarepants products.
But they didn't stop there! They kept adding more to our cart and by the time we left we had made a nice dent in the supply of toothbrushes and toothpaste. I was so happy because at no point did my kids ask if they could keep any of the products. They knew they were there to buy for those in need and they took that responsibility seriously.
In the past, we have donated items to our church. They have a truck in the parking lot that accepts donations and delivers donated items to food banks, shelters and homeless families. The girls were so excited to deliver a big bag of Colgate products to the van.
At one point they even climbed in the truck with all the donations.
Why should we be the ones to have all the fun? If you and your family are interested in participating in a SIMPLE Service Project like our #Colgate4Kids, all it takes is buying some dental supplies and donating them to an organization that helps children. At the start of this project, I thought we would simply be helping children have better dental hygiene, but I realized that we were all helped by stepping outside of ourselves and giving.
